I think I understand the sentiment behind the slavish devotion to Obama. I voted for Bill Clinton in ’92 and ’96.I know that this country is fucked, and that W. was at the helm during our demise. And because of that, people will do anything to not have another Republican in the White House.
I also get that Obama represents a historic first for our country. We have a huge scar left by slavery and racism and it is time we have a black president.
The problem is, that most people haven’t broken through the false left/right paradigm. Obama and McCain are two sides of the same coin. That is to say, big government will save the day. Well, I for one don’t believe the government can save anything or anybody.
Now, before I go any further, I am most likely going to vote for Cynthia McKinney, the Green Party candidate for President. Because she is a woman and women are the MOST OPPRESSED GROUP OF PEOPLE ON THE PLANET. But, if McKinney were not in the race, I would vote for Palin (and McCain by extension.) Finally, if neither McKinney nor Palin were in the race, I would vote for Obama.
I am a firm believer in the idea that people who are historically victims of discrimination, e.g., women, blacks, homosexuals, deserve special consideration to even out our political system.
These radical “affirmative action” principles would not be my choice in an ideal situation but they are what I call a “transitional” decision. Transitional in the same way that when France was occupied by the Nazis, life went on and political decisions had to be made, people elected, etc. I would compare the U.S. today to occupied France because we have been taken over by a rogue government hell-bent on driving our country into third world poverty.
I don’t believe affirmative action would be necessary in a perfect world, but we are far from perfect.
So, as Ayn Rand would describe the situation, my choice of McKinney is an example of “lifeboat ethics.” We find ourselves in a situation currently in the U.S. much like a person in a lifeboat with another person and only enough food for one to survive. No one can say what is right in such a situation. Survival becomes paramount.
